The world of outdoor advertising existed long before the billboard industry took shape. Early on, local merchants designed signs and posters, placing them on buildings or fences to showcase their offerings to passersby.
Billboards as we know them began to take form in the 1830s, gaining momentum throughout the 19th and early 20th centuries, particularly in promoting traveling shows like Buffalo Bill’s Wild West, carnivals, and vaudeville. The first known billboard was created by Jared Bell in 1835 for the Barnum & Bailey Circus. Since then, billboards have continually evolved, becoming a dominant force in advertising.
